Sponsor a child
KCF/KSC started their project of child sponsoring in the summer of 1992 and so far have found sponsors for thousands of children but there are still thousands more who need support
We assist children who have lost both parents and are living with a relative. Children who live with both parents but whose father is unable to work due to disability. Children whose father has died and whose mother has no other means of support.
Sponsoring a child
Child Sponsorship is a great way to give a child the hope of a better future. Every child deserves a life free of poverty, abuse and discrimination. Poverty robs children of their childhood and their future. Sponsoring children can make a real, long-term difference not only to the child but to the whole family.
If you are interested in sponsoring a child please send us a message (click here for form) and a member of our child sponsorship department will get in contact with you as soon as possible. You will be sent a short list of children who need a sponsor, please read through their details and e-mail the case number and the name of the child back to the sponsorship office. However we are glad to pick a child for you since we know which children need the most help
How much does it cost?
£15 ($30) per month, this gift helps to pay for health, education and clothing and enables a child to live with a member of their family. You can pay by several means. If you are in the UK then our preferred method is by a Standing Order with your Bank. This form is attached to the sponsorship form, which you can download here (click here for form) or you if you prefer you can pay online on our website, www.ksc-kcf.org. All transactions are secure through PayPal; a company specialized in secure online payments
How long can I sponsor a child?
We do not set a minimum period but we hope that you will be part of our sponsor programme for a long time. Many of our sponsors have been with us since the beginning of the sponsor programme and have sponsored several children during that time. Some of our other sponsors have stayed with us for a shorter time. But however long you will be with us please be assured that as a sponsor you are very important to us as well as to the children.
The children are normally sponsored until they reach the age of 18. However circumstances can change, families can leave the area without warning, or simply either theirs or your financial situation can change. You are, of course, free to cease your sponsorship at any time should your circumstances change.
Should you have any questions or concerns about your sponsorship then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
Can I write to my sponsored child?
This is personal to yourself; if you are not a writer then there is no pressure for you to write, it is not a requisition that sponsors write to their sponsored child but we strongly encourage them to do so.
When you decide to sponsor a child we will give you an email address or a postal address in the UK that you can send mail to. There is a limited postal service to Iraqi Kurdistan but it is very expensive to send a letter and can take up to two or three months to be delivered so normally mail has to be taken in and out by hand. KCF will hold your letter until it can be safely delivered to KSC’s office in Sulaimaniya.
Your letter will then be translated, and forwarded to the appropriate social worker who will deliver it your child. Depending on the accessibility of where your child lives it may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months for correspondence to travel between you and your sponsored child. There is a limited and not very reliable postal service so everything is delivered by hand.
Please allow our sponsored children the appropriate time to develop letter writing skills. Children love to receive letters, but they may find it very difficult to write them. This is especially true for younger children, children who start late in school, and children in remote villages. You will receive about two letters a year from your sponsored child who will write the letters themselves if he/she is able. Otherwise a family member, a friend, or neighbour will assist the child in writing.
Although we do not have the means to deliver gifts to your sponsored child small items like postcards, greeting cards, photographs, and pictures are very well received.
What can I write about?
Please keep your letters short and simple. Write about things your sponsored child will understand. Tell them about your family, your favourite pastimes, your hobbies or sports you enjoy. A description of your daily life. Customs for special holidays when they come around – Christmas/Easter etc. Describe the area where you live. Do you have pets?
Certain topics should be avoided like elaborating on your material possessions i.e. how big your house is, your overseas holiday, your new car, religion, politics etc.
When I sponsor a child what do I receive?
You will receive a photograph and a short personal history of your child plus the opportunity to correspond with your child and at least two letters each year, plus a copy of the Annual Report which includes the yearly accounts, which gives an update of KSC/KCF’s work, this can also be downloaded from our website.
