International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is observed annually on the 6th of February to enhance awareness of the issue and its negative effects and to encourage concrete actions against the practice.
Female genital mutilation is a grave violation against child rights and is a form of maltreatment and abuse of children according to article 19 and 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Female genital mutilation has short and long term negative effects on girl’s health, physical integrity and psychological state that could lead to depression, anxiety, instability and anger.
